Georgia Avenue Food Cooperative
Members of GACM co-op #4 sort the food at a co-op meeting
We have 5 food cooperatives with 50 families in each co-op, and a new 6th food co-op building up to 50 families. Our newest co-op began Dec. 1, 2011. Each co-op meets every other week. Members contribute a $3 handling fee and meet the truck as it arrives with approximately 1 Ton of food, unload the truck and divide the food into boxes according to family size categories. A medium-sized family usually receives about $100 worth of food on the retail market.
Food Co-ops for low-income families:
- -food with DIGNITY--our co-op members do the work and make a small financial contribution so that they have a sense of ownership
- -a co-op creates COMMUNITY--you are not alone!
- -a food co-op provides FOOD SECURITY so that our members are not worrying about whether they will be eating at the end of each month!
- -our co-ops FIGHT HOMELESSNESS by providing so much food that money is freed to pay other bills!
- -our co-ops TRANSFORM LIVES: members have stopped drinking, members have reported becoming better parents--just because they BELONG!
- -FAITH IS STRENGTHENED for those who have a belief in God, because we develop these co-ops in the name of Jesus (but we will serve anyone in need, regardless of religion).
- -our food co-ops provide a means of EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING
- -our MEMBERS’ ABILITIES AND TALENTS make the co-op run smoothly.
Come and See our food co-ops in action. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning our members gather at 10:00 to meet and unload the truck and divide the food among themselves. You are welcome to join us. Contact us ahead at 404-688-0871 or email Chad Hale at chadhale@gacm.org.
